Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is an action RPG played from a third-person perspective. The game was developed by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in September 2014. Its sequel, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, was released in 2017.
Story summary
Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor tells the story of events that take place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The Armies of Sauron brutally murder the family of our main protagonist, Talion, and he himself gets killed. However, his peace in death is short, as he is resurrected and bound to the spirit of an Elven Lord. United, they set out to Mordor to seek revenge.
Gameplay
Shadow of Mordor is set in an open world. The game features RPG elements such as skill points and experience, which can be used to unlock new abilities for both Talion and Celebrimbor (the Elven spirit). By developing the skills of the ranger (Talion), players gain a greater chance to move stealthily, while the abilities of the wraith allow them to influence the behavior of enemies.
Notably, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor introduces the Nemesis system, where even an average antagonist can rise to become a formidable foe and the player's recurring villain. How does it work? The Nemesis system ensures that enemies remember Talion and the outcome of their encounters. If Talion is defeated in battle (he doesn't permanently die), the enemy who bested him will rise in Sauron's ranks and become more powerful. As a result, during the next encounter, the player can expect a stronger enemy who mocks him and refers to the previous meeting.
However, this is not the only intriguing mechanic introduced by this system. As our protagonist has the ability to enter the world of spirits and manipulate the actions of enemies, he can coerce them to join his side, gaining valuable information from enemy camps, or completing minor tasks like opening gates.
It is worth noting that Warner has patented the Nemesis system (the patent expires in 2035), thus preventing other game developers from utilizing it.
The way players approach missions is highly flexible and depends on their choices. However, it should be mentioned that there are also specific tasks that offer additional rewards for completing them in certain ways.
Runes also play a role in the game, as they can be used to enhance Talion's weapons, increasing their effectiveness and granting bonuses such as health regeneration. However, to obtain runes, players must confront enemy captains.
