Basic Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom info

For a long time the mouse and cat tribes lived peacefully in the city of Ding Dong Dell, most recently ruled by young king Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum. After the mouse tribe conducts a coup d’etat the boy must travel the world and find a place to found a new kingdom for his people. Although Ni no Kuni 2 isn’t co-created by Studio Ghibli it retains the distinctive visual style, bright, colourful, and full of detail. The characters will be shown in two different styles: a simplified, chibi version of themselves running around the overworld, and a full-model versions during battles and, one assumes, story bits. It sounds sort of similar to games like Final Fantasy VII, which isn’t a bad thing at all.

Ni no Kuni 2 combat system

Unlike Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Revenant Kingdom adopts a fully active combat system. During battles, some of them reportedly waged in rather creative locations, like floating arenas, you’ll get to run around, dishing out swift and strong attacks, dodging more or less telegraphed attacks from the enemies. It’s a significant change from a more classical jRPG turn-based combat in the first game, for sure.

Ni no Kuni 2 – Higgledies

Where Wrath of the White Witch had familiars you could collect and sent to battle, Revenant Kingdom has Higgledies, tiny spirits with certain elemental and mystic affinities, growing significantly the more Higgledies gather around their leaders. While most of the won’t directly damage your foes, they can offer a plethora of benefits. They can heal you, shield you from specific attacks, confer offensive or defensive boosts etc. The kicker is that you’ll need to actually move towards them on the battlefield, which introduces an additional layer of tactical thinking.

Companions in Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom

King Evan’s journey will certainly be long, but it certainly won’t be lonesome. In addition to a moral and aesthetic support from the Higgledies, the monarch will be accompanied by two other travellers. One of them is Tani, a pirate captain’s daughter, out in the world for her own reasons. The other is Roland, and adult man from another world who decided to roam and fight for Ni No Kuni for a while instead of going back to his own world, Ichi no Kuni.

Rebuilding a kingdom in Ni no Kuni 2

Roaming the world righting wrongs isn’t enough. You will also need to find a place to rebuild your kingdom. Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom features a fully fledged management side activity. You will direct the construction of a new city for your people, down to the placement and type of new buildings. For once a game where you actually have some responsibilities deriving from the rank given to you by the plot. We’ll see how it works in the final product.

Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom – Skirmish mode

Small-scale combat isn’t the only thing waiting for Evan during Ni no Kuni 2 gameplay. There will also be Skirmishes: larger battles when you lead several custom squads of soldiers against the forces of your enemies. Although skirmishes won’t full-blown RTS sequences, they might be an abstraction as effective, as the chibi-fied travel, especially since the style is rather similar.
