Surely you remember No Man’s Sky right? How could you not, it’s one of the greatest PR disaster in gaming history. And, apparently, one of the greatest comeback stories all in one.
As of writing of this No Man’s Sky managed to claw its way out of mostly negative Steam reviews into mixed reviews, a fact that lead developer Sean Murray, a man you probably remember mostly for… Let’s use the industry appropriate term: “Molyneuxing“, decided to brag about on Twitter. But this is not about No Man’s Sky’s failure and Murray’s exaggerations meant to create hype, it’s about No Man’s Sky’s rebirth. No Man’s Sky was a flop and given its unfortunate launch freshly after the embers of Gamer Gate died down, it provoked incredible amounts of ire from everyone. But Murray and his team didn’t abandon the ship and the game retained a fanbase faithful to the original dream. The game quietly and steadily evolved. It now has quests, a working multiplayer, a lot of variety to the gameplay, an actual end-game content.
With that No Man’s Sky is slowly creeping back into the limelight and there’s a lot to like about the game now. Sean Murray’s attempts to resurrect the hype possibly being a cause for a second downfall not withstanding of course, it’s one of the more fascinating underdog stories of gaming in history.
I encourage you to try it now, if you somehow missed the controversy, this game is actually good now. And it’s genuinely one of the more impressive redemption stories I’ve heard.
