Apparently Star Wars: Battlefront 2 imagines itself to be Rocky Balboa- kicked down time and time again, but still trying to raise up. It’s apparently not done trying to stay relevant, with it’s line-up of updates and attractions.
As one means of improving the game, come April 18th, EA is adding a new mode to Star Wars: Battlefront 2, called Night on Endor. Interestingly, it’s not just a horde-mode, players will actually play as Ewoks who, although weaker than the Troopers, have numbers on their side and their swarm will grow as enemy Troopers die. Which is entirely appropriate, those furry bastards are absolutely terrifying.
More to the point though, the 18th April update will feature a long-awaited change to the in-game micro-transactions and a re-balance of the in-game progression. It will no longer be possible to become stronger through throwing money at the screen and (ostensibly), it’s not going to be a huge grind to unlock everything either. It will also be now possible to purchase customization options, like skins, for your unlocked characters.
It should be noted, however, that EA was initially… Reluctant to include purchasable cosmetics, citing “preserving the canon” as their motive. Previously, EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen, speaking for Technology and Media Conference, had this to say:
The one thing we’re very focused on and they’re extremely focused on is not violating the canon of Star Wars, It’s an amazing brand that’s been built over many, many years. So if you did a bunch of cosmetic things, you might start to violate the canon. Darth Vader in white probably doesn’t make sense, versus in black. Not to mention you probably don’t want Darth Vader in pink. No offense to pink, but I don’t think that’s right in the canon.
As for what could have possibly caused EA to go back on their… Stalwart resolve to defend the canon of Star Wars… Is anyone’s guess. I mean it might have something to do with that “most down-voted comment in Reddit’s history” thing, but I’m not a Jedi, so I can’t read minds. Maybe they’ve fallen to the Dark Side and wish to destroy Star Wars canon out of sheer spite? Who knows…
