Brendan Greene, the man behind Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds has said that we can’t expect free servers out of PUBG.
Barnded Greene has claimed that Bluehole can’t provide people with “free servers” for custom games as it wouldn’t be “financially viable”. Now I’m putting “free servers” in quotations, because one thing needs to be stated—the players have paid for these servers and keep paying for these servers with the money they spent on the game and on the microtransactions.
Mr Greene stated: “We just can’t provide free servers for everyone, it’s just not a sustainable business model. I still pay for ARMA 3 servers to this day, because that’s just how the world works.”
To which, in so few words I kind of have to respond with: are you aware of the concept of linear time mr Greene? No, seriously, do you understand that things change? That we no longer live in the times of Arma 3?
For this reason we might see a paywall of one sort or another as a gateway to the custom games servers. Which sounds like something players would be really pissed and which might in turn lead to less revenue stream overall, but hey, Playerunknown himself believes providing free servers isn’t sustainable, unlike angering your fanbase. I’m sure that’s a sustainable business strategy.
