When is Memorial Day?
To answer this question, let’s first write a few words about the meaning and origin of this holiday.
The first Memorial Day took place on May 30th, 1868, when Union soldiers who died in the Civil War (which ended on May 26th, 1865) were officially honoured. After several decades, the entire United States began to celebrate this day, and it gained the status of a federal holiday.
Until the 1970s, Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30th, but now it is a movable holiday, occurring on the last Monday of May. Because it falls on a Monday, we all can enjoy a longer weekend!
