Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is the sequel to the 2011 game Space Marine and continues the storylines introduced in the first instalment.
Space Marine 2 is a brand-new title that was released on September 9th, 2024, so you’re likely wondering whether you should play the first game before purchasing the second.
Or maybe you’re a loyal fan of the series and are curious about what has changed over the years and whether the new game is worth playing. Today, we bring you a quick Space Marine vs. Space Marine 2 comparison!
Epic Storylines: The Lore Behind Space Marine and Space Marine 2
Both titles belong to the franchise started by Games Workshop in the 1980s. Warhammer 40,000 or Warhammer 40k is a tabletop miniature wargame where fans can collect and paint figures of various characters, create maps, and engage in exciting battles.
The lore of Warhammer is set in the distant future, around the year 40,000. Humanity, under the rule of the Imperium, has conquered the entire Milky Way and beyond, but the world is far from a futuristic utopia.
Everyday life is filled with battles, conflicts, and wars — both among humans and against other races, demons, and even forces of darkness. To combat these threats, the Space Marines were created — genetically modified, big, strong, and highly resilient super-soldiers.
The first game takes place on the planet Graia, an industrial world critical to the production of the Imperium’s war machines. Graia is attacked by a race of Orks, brutal space invaders trying to seize control of the planet and its resources.
The forces of Chaos attempt to exploit the turmoil. Space Marine units, including the Ultramarines led by Demetrius Titus, are sent to fight them.
In Space Marine 2, you once again take on the role of Titus, who, after being disgraced and expelled from the Ultramarines due to unfortunate events, has proven his loyalty and returned after 100 years. Now, his task is to confront a new enemy — Tyranids — though the forces of Chaos are still present in this instalment.
Do you need to play the first game to enjoy the second? Not necessarily. Both are standalone titles, but knowing the first game will certainly help you get more immersed in the game’s world.
Characters and Factions
Space Marine 1 and 2 share many similarities. Storylines are continued, and characters are revisited. As mentioned earlier, you play as Demetrius Titus in both games, and both feature Space Marines, mainly Ultramarines, and the forces of Chaos.
However, it’s worth noting that the main antagonists in Space Marine are Orks — green-skinned, asexual creatures with characteristics of humans, animals, and fungi. In contrast, in the second game, you face massive hordes of insectoid xenos known as Tyranids, whose sole purpose is to devour all living things in their path.
Given the 100-year gap between the stories of the first and second parts, you’ll encounter different supporting characters in each game.
Graphics Across the Games
The graphics in Space Marine 1 and 2 are similar, despite being created by different studios. Both maintain a stylistic approach that doesn’t aim to be overly photorealistic, which means even the first game still holds up visually today.
However, there’s no denying that the graphics in Space Marine 2 are far superior. Character models and lighting are more refined, and the maps are more detailed. It’s also worth noting that the first game was designed for seventh-generation consoles, while Space Marine 2 was released on ninth-generation consoles. The PC versions also shows significant differences in hardware requirements.
Gameplay Evolution
When it comes to the solo campaign, both games are similar. In both Space Marine and Space Marine 2, you play as Titus, whose mission is to traverse battlefields and fight numerous enemies coming from all sides.
A significant difference is that, in the first part, your character was somewhat of a lone hero, despite having a two-person squad with him on many missions. In SP2, your companions, Brother Gadriel and Brother Charion, actively participate in combat.
The biggest addition, however, is the introduction of multiplayer modes, allowing for both cooperative PvE and competitive PvP gameplay. In multiplayer, you can create and customize your own Space Marine (choosing their appearance, class, and armour), as well as create your own Chapters and Squads according to your preferences.
Combat Systems Compared
In both games, combat is all about demolishing hordes of enemies. You’re given a large arsenal of melee weapons (including fan-favourite chainswords) as well as ranged weapons (various bolt pistols and guns), along with grenades and grenade launchers.
The introduction of multiplayer with different classes also allows you to choose your combat style. The classes are designed so that both melee combat enthusiasts and those who prefer ranged fighting or infiltration of enemy camps will find something to suit their play style. Weapons can also be upgraded and customized.
Multiplayer and Replayability: Which Game Keeps You Hooked?
Space Marine 1 offers a main campaign and several side missions, while Space Marine 2 allows for various multiplayer gameplay options. It’s logical to say that the second game has more replayability.
However, Warhammer fans might disagree. Despite many games being released under the Warhammer 40k franchise, Space Marine remains a beloved title, especially for those who hold the universe dear. How will it be in your case? The only way to find out is to order your copy of Space Marine 2 and experience it for yourself!
