Armed with essential weapons and a full set of armour, preferably with enchantments, is the best situation you could be in, but what if the equipment is no longer efficient and you need the bare tools back and enchant it again with better improvements?

Enchanting is probably one of the most useful things in Minecraft, but disenchanting is just as important. In this guide, you’ll learn how to remove any enchantment with three methods: by using an anvil, crafting table and grindstone.

1. Disenchanting with anvil

To know how to remove an enchantment from any tool, you need to know a recipe for creating the needed utility block. To make an anvil you’ll need three iron blocks and four iron ingots. Place horizontally the first material on the top of a crafting table and combine it with the iron ingots, which should resemble an inverted T – this will form the base of the anvil. If you don’t necessarily like collecting essential raw materials and prefer to take shortcuts, the finished block can be found in a woodland mansion in a dark forest.

Actually, this is not a way to get rid of an enchantment, but to combine two into one. To make an anvil work, you’ll need two tools or pieces of armour, whose enchantments will work better as one. The prerequisite is two of the same item – that’s the only way you’ll combine them. For example, if you have two pairs of boots and you’d like just one pair with the enchantments they have, then put them in an anvil to make one with full durability.

2. Disenchanting with crafting table

Curses have it in their nature that often the only way to get rid of them is to die. However, there is a way that works in some cases. If you have an item that is cursed, then by placing it in a crafting table along with another identical one (it may or may not be cursed), you will most likely succeed in removing the unwanted spell. Unlike an anvil, this procedure will not deprive you of any item, you will just keep both in your inventory.

3. Disenchanting with grindstone

You don’t have to go through a lot of effort to create a grindstone, as you only need to get two sticks, two planks of any kind and one stone slab. The layout of the materials looks exactly like creating a helmet. Place a stone slab at the top centre, sticks (from the top) and planks (underneath the sticks) on the sides. Of course, alternatively, you can look for the already created grindstone at the blacksmith villager.

Once you have completed this step, the next is to place items in the grindstone to disenchant them. There are two input slots, if you put an enchanted object in there you will simply get rid of the enchantments, however, this does not work for curses. Another possibility in this block is repair, which you do by combining two of the same items.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are several methods on how to disenchant items in Minecraft. However, you need to use your understanding of crafting and know how the various utility blocks work. Minecraft offers a lot of possibilities, so combine and experiment!
