Helldivers 2 is the continuation of the incredibly popular cooperative shooter Helldivers from 2015.
Arrowhead Game Studios was responsible for developing both the sequel and the first game. Helldivers 2 was released on February 8th for PlayStation 5 and PC.
The first instalment of the game turned out to be a bull’s eye for the Swedish game developer. It quickly gained a popularity and even received a nomination for “Game of the Year” at the annual DICE awards ceremony. Therefore, it’s no wonder that the release of the latest instalment was met with great excitement. Fortunately, the Swedes did not disappoint this time either, and Helldivers 2 sold like hotcakes.
In the physical version, the game is only available in the Standard Edition. However, concerning the digital version, the game was released in both the Standard vs Super Citizen Edition (Digital Deluxe). You’ll find a comparison of these two versions in the article below.
Overview of Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 is a third-person shooter set in a futuristic universe. The action takes place about a hundred years after Super Earth was saved by a group called the Helldivers. Unfortunately, humans don’t learn from their mistakes, and greed often prevails. Someone came up with the crazy idea of breeding terminids (cosmic bugs) for substances that enable galactic travel. As usual, the creatures escape from the breeding facility, and the Helldivers must once again come to the planet’s rescue.
While the game allows for both single-player and multiplayer gameplay, players agree that playing solo is not only extremely difficult, but also not as fun as in co-op mode!
An entirely new feature in Helldivers 2 is the third-person perspective – the first game had a top-down view. As for the gameplay mechanics, they remain largely unchanged. Just like in the first instalment, we’ll have the opportunity to use defences (machine gun sentry, laser, guard dog, etc.), but there will be more options to choose from. The same applies to equipment and weaponry.
Friendly fire also returns, in the second instalment of the game, meaning you have to be careful not to accidentally eliminate allies.
Since a lot of time has passed since the release of the first part, there is a significant graphical gap between the two instalments. In Helldivers, the environment seemed to be a minor addition, and the game focused on destroying hostile invaders. In Helldivers 2, the graphics are smooth (for a low-budget game), diverse, full of contrasts, and variations. Clear shadows are visible, and special effects like fog or toxic fumes appear. The Helldivers fighters themselves have well-designed and detailed weaponry.
Standard Edition: What’s Included
As usual, pre-ordering the Helldivers 2 video game rewarded players with bonuses. Along with the basic version of the game, players received three additional armours in the Standard Edition: TR-62 Knight, TR-7 Ambassador of the Brand, TR-9 Cavalier of Democracy.
Unfortunately, since the release has already taken place, pre-orders have ended. Therefore, in the case of purchasing the standard edition, players only receive the basic version of the game.
The Super Citizen Edition: The Extras Unveiled
The Super Citizen edition, available only in digital format, has been enriched with several additions. Along with the basic version of the Helldivers 2 game, players receive:
- “DP-53 Savior of the Free” armour set
- “Will of the People” cape
- “MP-98 Knight” weapon
- “Super Citizen” status
- “Stratagem Hero” ship mini-game
- Premium warbond “Steeled Veterans”
The first two additions are mostly cosmetic and do not have a significant impact on the quality and course of gameplay. The remaining ones, however, can bring players significant benefits.
For example, the MP-98 Knight is a rapid-fire submachine gun ideal for fighting terminids. On the other hand, the Stratagem Hero mini-game is a great training ground that prepares players for missions.

Comparing the Standard vs Super Citizen Edition, the first thing most players will notice is the price. Yes, the Standard Edition is available for $39.99 (at the moment of writing this article). However, if you dream of the Deluxe version, you will have to pay a little more.
Considering the benefits derived from the additions included in the Super Citizen Edition, the extra circa. $20 doesn’t seem like an exorbitant amount. Especially since the aforementioned MP-98 Knight weapon is only available in the Deluxe edition.
Conclusion
When deciding on a specific edition of the game, we often consider the price in the first place. In the case of Helldivers 2, the game developers catered for their fans and players who opted for the Standard Edition, a possibility to upgrade their Standard game to Super Citizen later on. So, if you’re among those who can’t decide on a specific version, this solution may be perfect for you.
Of course, if you aren’t concerned about the extras from the Deluxe version, you can comfortably stick with the basic version of the game, especially since it has a lot to offer. Either way, the choice is yours!
