Dragon’s Dogma is an action role-playing hack’n’slash game developed by Capcom.
The game tells the story of the Arisen, a man (or woman, as the protagonist is fully customizable) who lost everything in a dragon attack, including his life. After reawakening as humanity’s champion, Arisen swears vengeance upon the beast.
The game is a pretty standard action-RPG title, with the player exploring the world, fighting monsters, and completing quests. If you played the game and would like to experience similar fantasy thrills, take a look at our list of 10 games similar to Dragon’s Dogma.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Release: | 2015-05-18 |
Genre: | RPG |
Developer: | CD PROJEKT RED |
DD and The Witcher 3 share similar setting and gameplay features.
Both games focus on exploring a fantastical world filled with monsters and slaying said monsters. The main differences are the protagonists of both titles. While Dragon’s Dogma’s Arisen is pretty much a player insert character with little backstory except, Geralt of Rivia has pages upon pages of lore backing his final adventure in the virtual world.
The developers The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt put a tremendous effort into creating a thriving open-world environment, where the player could get lost for hours completing quests and participating in optional activities. For that CD Projekt RED’s production deserves the highest notes.
The Continent is brimming with content waiting for the player to discover it. The story, inspired by various plot points of Sapkowski’s novel is also a strong point of the game. The Witcher 3 is an excellent choice for the fans of epic fantasy adventures and well-made action-RPGs

Dark Souls: Remastered
Release: | 2018-05-24 |
Genre: | Action |
Developer: | QLOC |
Another game too popular to spend much time writing about.
Practically everyone interested in video games has heard about FromSoftware’s action-RPG – the bane of casuals, starter of heated discussions on game difficulty, etc. With the Remastered version released in 2018, Dark Souls has gained new polish fitting for the 8th generation of consoles.
Not much has changed in terms of gameplay mechanics – Dark Souls: Remastered is still the same grind-you-into-dust difficult hack and slash action-RPG with elements of roguelike mechanics.
The main differences can be found in the presentation – the game runs now at 60fps and the graphics have been updated. Another change is the multiplayer mode – now with up to 6 participants and password servers. If you want to experience unique gameplay in a grim fantasy world or simply relive the dread of frantically rolling away from powerful bosses’ attacks, you should definitely pick up Dark Souls: Remastered.

Mass Effect: Andromeda
Release: | 2017-03-23 |
Genre: | Adventure |
Developer: | BioWare Montréal |
The fourth installment of the Mass Effect series doesn’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to gameplay mechanics.
It is still a decent action-RPG set in outer space, in which the player explores various systems of the titular Andromeda galaxy. The game features a customizable protagonist named Ryder, various mechanics the fans of the series have grown to love as well as some new ones.
The first of significant changes is reinvented system of acquiring skills. In previous games of the series, the player had to choose one of several classes with an allotted set of abilities. In Andromeda, skills can be assigned to the character freely.
Another change is the removal of the feature to pause time during combat. Using skills and aiming occurs completely in real-time. The game still features the dialogue-wheel system from the previous installments and yes, there are romance options. The fans of space exploration and romancing alien beauties (and hunks) will have a great time with Mass Effect: Andromeda

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning
Release: | 2020-09-08 |
Genre: | Action RPG |
Developer: | Big Huge Games |
The remastered version of Kingdoms of Amalur improves the visuals on this action-RPG title.
The game is set in the fantastical world of Faelands, inhabited by various races, such as humans, elves, etc. The player character, known as the Fateless One, awakens as a result of the experimentation of a gnome scientist. Left with no memories of their past, the Fateless One embarks on a quest to find the scientist and get some answers.
The player is given a choice of several races and classes, each of them possessing different skills. Throughout the game, the player will explore the regions of Faelands, encountering NPCs and accepting quests from them.
There are several ways in which the player can interact with the NPCs, including talking to them or robbing them. The combat is carried in a style similar to other action-RPG games. The player can use various weapons and use spells. Accumulating special Fate points allow the player to slow down time and deal with the enemies easier. A classic offering for the fans of the genre.

Mount and Blade: Warband
Release: | 2010-03-31 |
Genre: | Adventure |
Developer: | TaleWorlds Entertainment |
Mount and Blade: Warband is as ambitious as it is, uh, rough around the edges.
Despite the fact that the game is far from being the most beautiful title in the world, it offers enough interesting gameplay solutions that the fans of action-RPGs will easily look past the, um, graphical deficits.
The game aims to simulate life in Medieval Europe. The player begins the play by choosing the origin of their character – deciding on the soil class of the protagonist will affect their standing in the world.
From that point forward, the player can go about completing quests and making themselves known in the world of the game. The title features elements of strategy, with the player often leading armies into battle on the overworld map. If you ever wanted to try your luck at being a knight in a game that emphasizes realism, the Mount & Blade: Warband is a game just for you.

Gothic
Release: | 2006-10-13 |
Genre: | RPG |
Developer: | Piranha – Bytes |
An absolute action-RPG classic couldn’t be omitted from our list. In Gothic, the player controls a nameless prisoner in a mining colony.
The prisoner is tasked with delivering a letter to the Order of Magicians of Fire – an event that launches the plot of the game and sends the prisoner on a quest against powers stronger than he could possibly believe.
Gothic emphasizes interactivity between the world of the game and the player. The player can, for example, hunt animals and sell the meat for gold or use it to heal wounds. Through exploration and fighting the player will increase their skill levels in various areas, such as combat and spellcasting.
The game features various camps (factions) the player can join. However, the choice bears little meaning to the overall plot. Gothic is an absolute classic that any fan of action-RPGs should play at least once.

The Technomancer
Release: | 2016-06-28 |
Genre: | Adventure |
Developer: | Spiders |
Last but not least, we have The Technomancer. This action-RPG is set in on Mars, 200 years after the first humans had arrived to colonize the Red Planet.
Currently, Mars is torn by War for Water, in which various conglomerates fight for control of the precious resource. The player controls Zachariah, a young Technomancer working for one of the companies. On the run from his former employer, Zachariah moves towards the city of Noctis, to make contact with Earth.
The Technomancer features various interesting gameplay mechanics. For example, the titular technomancy – an electric-based superpower that the protagonist posses can be used to deal with enemies effectively.
The game offers the player an expansive combat system, with three different styles augmented by Zachariah’s powers. Like other action-RPGs, violence is only one means to the end. The player can also use various dialogue options to talk their way out of trouble or convince an NPC to help. The Technomancer is full of these little neat concepts that make it a perfect game for the enthusiasts of action-RPGs.
