Science Fiction Games
Video games are often meant to give us an opportunity to experience things and events we otherwise wouldn’t be able to. Historical settings, medieval battles, fantasy conflicts, fairy lands, or even sports games – all of these can give us a bit of a taste of how would it feel like to be someone we’re not. An army commander, a ruler of a nation, a soldier, a professional sportsman, a mayor, a gangster…
It’s only natural that one of the video game genres went into a more sci-fi direction, focusing on giving us a first-hand experience of how humanity could evolve and what we could potentially become in the future. What futuristic technologies we may have in the future and how other intelligent species could look like and behave.
Science fiction games may or may not be backed by real science. Sometimes the technologies presented in science fiction video games aren’t being talked about in great detail. Usually, the technologies are just there and they work – no one asks why they work or is it even physically possible for them to work. No one asks about how likely it would be for a certain technology to be developed. Would it be really that useful to have it invented in the first place? Or is it just a pure fantasy made to make the gameplay more interesting?
What video games are set in the future?
There are also some games that are not afraid of digging a bit deeper – they try their best to accurately predict the direction in which humanity may evolve.
The Mass Effect series, for example, does a pretty good job at creating a believable sci-fi setting. It feels like everything you experience in the game is a very possible scenario that could happen at some point in the future, given our current understanding of how the law of physics work. There are, of course, some inaccuracies, but the game goes surprisingly deep into the details, trying to explain how most things in the game actually work.
Cyberpunk 2077 is also an interesting game to try if you’re looking for a believable sci-fi environment. Sure, it’s not the most accurate game out there, especially considering the fact that it takes place in 2077 – it would be very optimistic to think that we’ll get all the game’s sci-fi tech in just a few decades from now. However, if you gave humanity a little bit more time, Cyberpunk’s version of our future becomes quite accurate and touches on a lot of important topics that are related to society as a whole.
If you’re looking for addictive sci-fi games, you can’t forget about Aliens vs. Predator, No Man’s Sky, Doom or Stellaris. Death Stranding is also a solid option if you’d like to play a supernatural sci-fi game.
