Still, even though planes exist for quite some time already, many of us didn’t have an opportunity to fly in a passenger’s seat even once in our lifetimes, yet alone become a pilot.

Simulation vs arcade
Airplane games are a great source of entertainment, but that entertainment comes usually in two entirely different forms: simulation and arcade. Alternatively, the game can mix elements from two types to create something that’s appealing to a wider audience. Depending on what you’re looking for in plane games, you’ll be probably interested in checking out different options.
For example, if a pure sandbox simulation experience is what you’re after, you can’t miss Microsoft Flight Simulator – arguably one of the best and most realistic flight simulators available right now. There’s no combat in the game, just a world for you to explore. What makes MFS especially interesting is the fact that it uses Bing Maps to map the entire real world in 3D. That’s right, you can take your favorite modern plane for a trip and visit your hometown or other places you always wanted to see from above, with most of the buildings being there, thanks to the advanced AI that does most of the modeling work behind the scenes. Models are not 100% accurate, but it’s usually close enough to make the experience unbelievably realistic. To make the simulation even more immersive, it’s strongly recommended to get a professional controller set – at least a joystick and a control panel. You can still take things to an even higher level if you get yourself a VR set.
Microsoft Flight Simulator is surely impressive, but it also demands an equally impressive PC to run smoothly and not look like a pixel-art game. If your PC doesn’t meet the game’s requirements, you could pick something less resource-hungry from the list of aviation games, such as X-Plane 11. It comes with slightly worse graphics but it still looks surprisingly good. Additionally, in general X-Plane 11 is considered a better sim with more accurate physics and fewer technical issues, so if you’re not interested in having an entire world mapped inside the game, or your PC is not from the higher tier, this sim is definitely the way to go. It may be slightly harder for newcomers to get into, but learning how to play it is well worth your time.
Combat Fighter Airplane Games
If you’re looking for more combat-oriented plane games, there is a classic IL-2 Sturmovik simulation series of historically accurate WW2 titles. On the other hand, Ace Combat 7 provides a more arcade-style experience that takes place in modern times.
Another interesting combat option to try would be Arma III. Although it’s not specifically a flight game but rather a military sandbox focused on various multiplayer scenarios, it’s on the list of games with planes and it does the flying part well. Here you’ll be able to join other people and perform a variety of tasks while playing against either other players or computer squads. The game is especially worth considering if you’ve got friends that would be willing to join you – playing in a group of best buddies is ten times better than playing with random people. This way you can set your own rules and make a perfect sandbox environment.
Become a pilot and get a realistic flight experience. Whether you prefer some fast-paced combat action or a leisure simulation focused on flying around with no set goal, there’s surely something for you out there.
