Modern Warfare II's multiplayer modes do use skill-based matchmaking, or SBMM. By pairing players with comparable skill levels, this method seeks to produce competitive and well-balanced matches that improve the overall game experience. You also can’t rely on gear alone to carry you through the matches themselves.

Although Modern Warfare II strives for realism in both its visuals and gameplay, players' perspectives on whether it is the "most realistic" game differ.
